George N. Malandrakis currently serves as an Assistant Professor in Environmental Education, at the Department of Primary Education, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
He was born in Greek island of Samos in 1970. In 1992 he received his Bachelor in Primary Education from the University of Crete (Rethymno) and in 1996 he received his Master’s Degree from the same Department.
From 1996 to 1998 he served his military service, and immediately afterwards he was appointed as a primary school teacher, where he served until 2011.
n parallel, from 2000 to 2004 he prepared his Doctoral Thesis at the Department of Primary Education, University of Crete, titled:
«Exploring local ecological disturbances through classroom experiments with household and school-based hazardous products.
Education as a potential means to address these disturbances through teaching intervention aiming to conceptual change». Also, from 2007 to 2009 he served at the Environmental Education Center of Giannitsa (EEC) and from 2006 to 2010 he taught as Adjunct professor at the Department of Primary Education at the University of Western Macedonia (Florina).
In 2009 he was elected and in 2011 he was appointed Lecturer at the Department of Primary Education, University of Western Macedonia (UOWM – Florina) in the field of “Environmental Education”, while in 2016 he was elected and appointed Assistant Professor in the same Department and in the same field.
In 2017 he was elected and in 2018 he was appointed Assistant Professor at the Department of Primary Education, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, again in the field of “Environmental Education”.
In addition to the undergraduate courses, he teaches systematically in three Postgraduate Programs of both the UOWM and the AUTh.
He is married and has two children.
His research – scientific work is developed in three areas:
- the exploration of students’ ideas and understanding regarding various environmental issues and issues related to sustainability.
- the development of educational material and Teaching Learning Sequences (TLS) for various environmental and sustainability issues.
- the development of research tools in the field of education for sustainability.
The topics of his research are related, but not limited, to the greenhouse effect and climate change, footprints (ecological, energy, water), foodmiles and sustainable nutrition, environmental ethics, and urban sustainability.
To date, he has published 23 papers in international peer-reviewed journals and three in Greek, one chapter in a foreign language and four in Greek collective volumes. He has also
published 18 papers in international scientific conferences with referees and 36 in Greek. He is/has participated in 4 funded research projects, in two of which as coordinator. He is supervising three doctoral dissertations and has completed the supervision of one more. He has also supervised more than 15 master thesis and 25 dissertations.
